According to researchers, the strong emphasis on fruits and vegetables is the biggest reason this diet has such positive affects on health. These nutrient dense foods are known for their antioxidant power. Antioxidants are responsible for repairing and preventing any damage to the body that may lead to a number of serious health conditions, including heart disease and cancer. Fruits and vegetables are also full of fiber and water, which fill you up with minimal calories.
The presence of nuts was another factor. Nuts are rich in calcium, potassium, and fiber and when prepared without sugar, salt, and extra fat, contribute to a healthy heart. Lower cholesterol levels are another great benefit that a diet rich in nuts can provide.
Beans were also found to be responsible for providing the core nutritional benefits of this eating regimen. They are a protein and fiber-rich staple of the diet. The versatility of beans allows them to be used as a cholesterol and fat-free meat alternative in a number of different dishes.
