In an article published by HealthDay News, it was reported that getting enough sleep is equally important as diet and exercise when it comes to losing those post-pregnancy pounds. The article mentions a study done which analyzed the sleep patterns of new mothers six months after giving birth. The women who only slept five hours or less each night were three times as likely to retain postpartum weight than the women who were able to sleep seven hours or more.
One clinical associate at the University of Chicago Medical Center indicated that this may be due in part to changes in the hormones responsible for appetite regulation brought on by severe sleep deprivation.
It’s important to note that short sleep duration was identified as an “independent risk factor” for weight retention, while other lifestyle factors, such as diet and physical activity, were not thoroughly evaluated.
