The Biggest Losers: Why Men Lose Fat Faster Than Women

It is often seen that in the competition to lose extra pounds, men lose fat faster than women.

This can be quite frustrating for many women who work hard at shedding the weight, constantly exercising and depriving themselves of the foods they love.  The four primary reasons why there is such a difference in the effort required for men to lose weight in comparison to women are as follows:

Men Have More Lean Body Mass
In a comprehensive study done, men were found to possess a greater deal of lean body mass (muscle) than women.  The more lean body mass you have, the faster your metabolism works to burn fat.  The study concluded that the prominence of lean body mass was responsible for raising the metabolism of the average male to a level that was 5 - 10% higher than his female counterparts.

Men Reduce Calories at a Greater Percentage When Dieting
Most males that are overweight eat insane amounts of food without actually realizing it.  When they become more weight and health conscious, they reduce their calories to more practical levels.  If they were eating over 3000 calories a day and lowered their intake to 2000 calories a day or less, the result is a reduction that is greater than 33%.  This type of drastic change in eating causes them to drop weight fairly quickly.

Women Diet Too Often
Women tend to be more self-conscious about their physical appearance than men.  This often drives them to continually diet to improve the way they look.  Research has shown that the less calories you consume, the slower your metabolism will be.  This is due in part to the body adjusting itself to this lower calorie intake so that it doesn’t have to work as hard.  Eating too few calories also changes the chemistry of the body to the point that hormone levels are shifted out of balance.  This shift creates enormous stress on the body and causes women to hold on to more fat.

Women Have Greater Fat Stores
Women naturally possess excess body fat, which is required for breastfeeding and pregnancy.  Unlike their male counterparts who deposit fat in the mid-section of the body, women are found to store this fat in more stubborn locations, such as the hips, the thighs, the buttocks, and the lower abdomen.  It is usually very challenging to shed fat from these areas.

Men have a natural physical advantage over women, but women can level the playing field by adopting exercise routines that will increase lean muscle mass.  They can also make wiser and healthier choices regarding the number and quality of calories consumed each day.  This combination will provide them with a more efficient metabolism and help them to burn fat more effortlessly.
