Binge eating has become a major eating disorder these days and people suffering from it need to know how to conquer it so they can lead normal, healthy lives. Binge eating essentially refers to a condition which drives the sufferer to compulsively consume food in large amounts, even when he/she is not hungry, while feeling completely out of control. This is followed by pangs of guilt and dejection. More than an eating disorder, binge eating is a psychological disorder and it affects millions.

Although many men fall victim to the disorder, it is more severe in cases of women. For many binge eaters, the problem seems to develop primarily during childhood or adolescence but it may be years before they are actually diagnosed and treated. The tragedy is that most binge eaters remain unaware that they are even suffering from this disorder and therefore never get the help necessary to conquer it.
Characteristics of a Binge Eater
It is more common for binge eaters to be either overweight or obese, even though some sufferers are well within normal weight ranges. Many people suffering from a binge eating disorder gain weight and the weight gradually becomes impossible to control. Such people do not eat at any fixed time and mostly eat in the absence of others. The shame associated with eating binges causes them to act in secrecy - hiding food containers and any other evidence or sneaking away to eat in hidden places. For these people, not knowing how to overcome this binge eating problem becomes further challenging and increasingly frustrating. This disappointment in themselves and the situation perpetuates a vicious cycle of stuffing themselves with food and then becoming ill at the end. Another thing found to be prevalent among this group is a lack of self respect and a deep seated unhappiness among family and friends, and also in their work environment.
Binge Eating Triggers
Doctors say that there are various emotional and psychological factors that can trigger this disorder in both men and women. Depression caused by any personal loss or failure acts as one major trigger for binge eaters. Elevated stress and anxiety levels that arise due to the various events that occur in one’s life are another common trigger. This is because binge eaters turn to food as a way to cope with feelings of being overwhelmed. Dieting is another trigger. The type of dieting that severely restricts food intake and requires excessive amounts of self-control has been known to trigger bouts of eating binges.
In some cases, the problem may also be genetic. There have been a number of studies done that have revealed a correlation between certain gene characteristics and specific cases of binge eating. This may be why people with a history of binge eating in their family are more likely to fall victim to this disorder than others. For people struggling with this problem, recognizing specific triggers and any genetic pre-disposition is a key step in the process of gaining control and defeating it.
The Damage of Binge Eating
Binge eating has the power to siphon off years from the lives of suffers. It can lead to a number of chronic conditions and illnesses that can be quite fatal. These include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, insomnia, arthritis, obesity, cardiac arrest, or even death. Most psychologists have detected suicidal instincts among such people. It is very important for individuals to learn how to conquer this disorder, and begin living healthy, productive lives.
The Solution Lies Within
Since binge eating is a psychological disorder, the primary focus in overcoming this disorder should be on the mental and emotional components of one’s life. The sufferer should first deviate from any negativity that may surround him/her. Elimination of all negative thoughts has to be a priority. Indulging in a hobby like swimming, running, gardening, or reading can do wonders. It can give them a certain satisfaction from life and help them in their pursuit to conquer binge eating. The patient should also get treated for any symptoms of depression. Additionally, engaging in meditation and mind/body/spirit disciplines, such as Yoga or Tai Chi, may empower individuals to quiet the internal noise and release the toxic energy that is often responsible for setting off certain triggers.
A Final Word
If you or someone you know might be suffering from a binge eating disorder, seek the help of a healthcare professional before the issue gets any worse. You will first need to be examined by a physician to rule out any physical problems. Afterwards, you will be referred to a psychiatrist or psychologist that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of these sorts of mental conditions. Partnering with your mental health professional by openly communicating and faithfully committing to treatment will ensure your success at putting this disorder behind you.
