Why We Get Gas
Intestinal gas build-up occurs when there is a dysfunction in the digestive process. It can occur for a number of reasons, including irritable bowel syndrome, an inability to completely break down certain components in food, swallowed air trapped in the colon, or even a change in the balance of intestinal

Relief Without Medicine
In addition to identifying the root cause of your bouts of gas by monitoring your food intake and documenting your specific reactions, you can also make a minor change to your daily routine that may make a major difference in your life. Exercise. Surprise! The dreaded “E” word. Exercise has so many mental, physical, and emotional benefits. Now, you can add gas relief to the mix.
The Proof
According to a study published by the American Journal of Gastroenterology, mild exercise improves the body’s ability to clear out intestinal gas and reduces the amount of gas retained in the gut. The result is a decrease in abdominal bloating and other symptoms related to excessive gas. For participants, gas retention was lower during periods of exercise. This may be partially due to exercise accelerating the time that it takes for the body to move substances through the digestive system (stomach, intestines, and colon). This means that there is less time for fermenting and toxin build-up to take place in the gut, which are known to be primary components of gas and flatulence related issues.
Mild to Moderate Exercise May Be The Cure
A little exercise goes a long way when it comes to flatulence and the relief of gas. Ten minutes of mild to moderate exercise, like walking or jogging, after each meal will have a significant impact on gas retention and expulsion. If you can’t squeeze in the movement after each meal, try scheduling about 30 minutes of exercise after your largest meal, which is usually at the end of the day. Exercise will not only provide immediate gas relief, but will also produce the long term benefits of improved digestion and absorption of nutrients.
Mind, Body, Spirit Disciplines Should Also Be Explored
Yoga, Tai Chi, and Pilates are also great for people experiencing excessive flatulence and gas problems. These disciplines encourage movements and postures that provide support for and enhance the body’s natural functions. Adopt a routine that incorporates one or more of these forms of exercise at least 3 times a week so you can gain control over your digestive system and your overall body.
