Question Three

Do testosterone levels drop after exercising?

Mike’s Answer:

There are many different factors that will affect hormone levels after exercise. The type of exercise performed and the intensity level will determine what hormones will be released. Testosterone levels will increase after most resistance training programs. This rise will last from about 45-60 minutes after your workout and then drop back to normal. If you workout too hard and too long, however, you can be at risk for over training and testosterone levels may decrease. If you workout for longer than 90 minutes, this may occur. Workouts that are shorter in duration and higher in intensity have shown to increase testosterone levels the most.

Endurance training may decrease testosterone levels. Endurance athletes usually have lower resting testosterone levels. Endurance sports, such as long distance running, is a catabolic activity meaning hormones such as cortisol increase and testosterone levels will decrease. If you want to perform endurance exercise but do not want to see testosterone levels decrease, stick to short high intensity workouts and combine them with resistance training routines to increase testosterone levels.
